THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/convention/italy

19/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - Valdo Spini, alternate to Marco Follini (one of the representatives from the Italian parliament at the European Convention), has presented amendments to the articles on the election of the European Commission President by the European Parliament. He considers as "quite unsatisfactory" the Praesidium's proposal whereby the Parliament can only accept or refuse a single candidate. Mr Spini therefore proposes that the EP should elect the President of the Commission "by voting among the candidates put forward" as, he said, if there is only one candidate, the EP's freedom would be "considerably limited: either it ratifies the Council proposal and, hence, does not have a role, or, if it rejects its candidate, it clashes head on with the Council, a somewhat theoretical assumption".
