11/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - German Green member Heide Rühle commented on the cry of alarm raised by certain of her colleagues who called for security measures around the European Parliament in Brussels to be strengthened. She said: "Brussels is not Chicago", even though, like other European towns, there are problems of crime, from which the inhabitants suffer just as much as MEPs. The statement by CSU member Ingo Friedrich whereby Brussels could become a "small Chicago" is just deforming reality, Ms Rühle said, noting that many in Brussels still feel the European institutions are a "foreign body". The Brussels Region, she added, is currently seeking not only to open 800 new posts for the police but also to make the town more attractive for people who have moved to the outlying district.
