Luxembourg, 16/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - If Italy ensures that local authorities comply with the ruling of the European Court of Justice on Thursday, all EU nationals aged over 60, like Italians of the same age, will be able to have free or preferential entry into all museums, monuments, parks, archaeological digs and gardens municipal or national. The sixth chamber, presided over by Judge Puissochet, condemned Italy, responsible for failure to comply with Community law on its territory. The Italian Government had already intended extending these reduced prices to EU nationals visiting national museums. But it said it did not have the power to force municipal authorities to do likewise for municipal museums, including those of Florence, Venice, Padua and Trevisia). The Court rejected the reasons, notably of a fiscal nature, that could, according to the Italian authorities, justify only granting these reduced prices to residents on the Italian territory.
