Lamy and Liikanen at Chicago Conference

Brussels, 06/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioners Pascal Lamy and Erkki Liikanen, responsible, respectively, for trade and business, are taking part in the annual transatlantic businesses dialogue (TABD), being held in Chicago from 6 to 8 November. The recommendations that business leaders hope to emerge from this meeting, in anticipation of the forthcoming Euro-American Summit, should focus on capitals market, dispute management, the internet economy, the World Trade Organisation and regulatory policy. Shortly before leaving Brussels, Messrs. Liikanen and Lamy stressed the importance of the process incarnated by this dialogue, both for "increasing transparency in the decision-making process" on both sides of the Atlantic, and "thus in future to avoid commercial upsets", as well as to "support multilateral trade negotiations in their crucial phase". This meeting was to bring together some sixty business leaders (from Boeing, the steel firm Thyssen, BAE Systems, Fiat, Pechiney, etc.), as well as representatives of the American Administration, Congress and the European Parliament.
