06/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - MEPs members of Democratici di sinistra Gianni Pittella and Claudio Fava said in a press release that the Italian government would have to consider itself responsible if Molise (where the earthquake of San Giuliano led to the death of several children and deprived many people of a roof) cannot benefit from interventions from the new Disaster Solidarity Fund. Indeed, they recall, the minister for Community policy, Buttliglione, "contributed, in Council, to trebling (from 1 to 3 billion euro) the minimum threshold for damage from which this Fund could kick in". Now, the minister is proving to be "inexplicably optimistic as to the possibility of Italy benefiting from" intervention from the Fund for the earthquake in San Giuliano, but to do so, "damage would have to be at least six billion old lira!" the MEPs exclaimed.
