06/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - In a letter addressed to Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou, the Secretary General of the Trade Unions Confederation (ETUC) Emilio Gabaglio stated that he was worried about the initiatives taken by the Portuguese government to amend the labour code. According to the Portuguese affiliated members of the ETUC (CGTP-IN and the UGT) this risks, "seriously undermining the rights of workers and unions". This is why Mr Gabaglio has asked Ms Diamantopoulou to, "monitor very closely the process begun by the Portuguese government, in order to avoid any violation of social rights and European standards and ensure that possible reforms are introduced by way of social dialogue".
