10/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - As already reported, an EU diplomatic delegation headed by Carsten Nilaus Pederson, regional director at the Danish foreign ministry, has completed a three-day tour of Burma to assess political progress since the EU mission in March 2002. Upon arrival in Yangon on Sunday, the four diplomats met various players in the national reconciliation process, including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (Nobel Peace Prize winner), various government representatives and representatives of Burma's biggest ethnic groups. They were also hoping to meet Lieutenant General Khin Nyunt, the junta's third most powerful member, before leaving on Tuesday evening. The EU has an arms embargo on Burma, refusing to issue visas or provide aid (apart from humanitarian aid). Last year it hoped that significant changes would come about before it reassesses its common position (in October). Some 300 political prisoners have been released since January 2001, but many more remain in detention and negotiations between the opposition and the junta have been at a standstill since the release of the leader of the national democracy league in July 2002.
