10.7 billion euro-zone surplus in June 2002

Brussels, 21/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - According to Eurostat, the Official Statistics Office of the European Communities, euro-zone1 trade with the rest of the world in June 2002 was a 10.7 billion euro surplus, against +4.7 bn in June 2001. Euro-zone trade recorded a surplus of 42.0 bn euro for the first six months of 2002, against +4.3 bn in 2001. In June 2002 extra-EU15 trade was a 2.3 bn euro surplus, compared with a 4.7 bn deficit in June 2001. The EU15 recorded a deficit estimated at 6.2 bn in the first six months of 2002 compared with -43.9 bn in 2001. The energy deficit decreased slightly (-45.6 bn in Jan-May 2002 compared to -49.5 bn in Jan-May 2001), while the surplus for machinery and vehicles strongly increased (+35.0 bn compared to +23.5 bn). The EU recored a significant fall in imports from Japan (-18%), USA (-11%) and Russia (-8%), and in exports to Japan (-9%) and Switzerland (-6%). In contrast there were notable increases in exports to Russia (+20%), Turkey (+12%) and China (+9%), and in imports from the Czech Republic (+12%) and Turkey (+7%).
