Strasbourg, 21/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer expressed his solidarity with the people affected by, "unprecedented flooding in the heart of Europe". He explained how European organisations had to measure the full magnitude of the disaster and take exceptional measures. He explained that the Council of Europe Development Bank (which is part of the pan-European organisation) was ready to contribute together with the authorities concerned in the reconstruction effort and help prevent future disasters. The Governor of the Development Bank had already informed the governments that he was ready to send a team into the field. The Council of Europe will also offer expert assistance for the restoration of cultural heritage damaged by the floods.
