Vedrine would like Washington to agree to the debate

Paris, 21/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - Answering questions on Wednesday at the National Assembly on President Bush's "axis of evil" address, French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine stressed that, since 11 September, "we have not bartered our support to a people of have suffered terribly (…) The fight against terrorism is a necessity and must be energetically pursued. But can all the problems of the world be put down to that?. Must the fight against terrorism only be conducted through military means? To ignore the causes and deep roots would be too simplistic". Vedrine noted that other European politicians were concerned at the tendencies emerging in Washington, "which surprised the Americans". He then continued: "But, as Joschka Fischer said, the allies are not satellites! And, as requested by Jose Maria Aznar, there has to be a debate on the shape the fight against terrorism must take and against the proliferation of mass destruction (..). We intend to participate in this debate to the full. The power of the United States confers on it no less exceptional a responsibility. We would like the Americans to agree to this legitimate debate and engage in a multilateral approach to the world's major problems: terrorism, sure, but also poverty, injustice, regional tragedies and world governance".
