French association against summer time fails in its attempt to do away with putting the clock forward

Luxembourg, 21/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - President of the Second Chamber of the Court of First Instance Rui Manuel Gens de Mouna Ramos considered as inadmissible the action initiated by the "Association française contre l'heure d'été" (Ache), which had called for cancellation of the Directive of 19 January 2001, that fixes the beginning and the end of summer time. The association and its members were not able to demonstrate that the Directive concerned them individually: all Europeans are subject to summer time and the members of Ache do not come under any special circumstances that set them apart from other EU inhabitants, the President explains.

Ache had been created in the aim of drawing public attention to the damage done by changing the clock and of doing away with summer time.

The Directive of 19 January 2001 provides for summer time (time advanced one hour ahead of standard time for daylight saving) to begin at 1 a.m. on the last Sunday in March and to end the last Sunday in October at the same time.
