Brussels, 21/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - In its seminar on Thursday morning on the Convention on the future of Europe, the European Commission held discussions lasting more than two hours, but put off until next week the publication of conclusions on priorities and the method it would be adopting for the Convention. A Commission spokesperson on institutional reform said that the College had had an official dinner with the EIB but had not had enough time to come back to this issue, which is why it was being put off until next week. The spokesperson added that there had not been any particular disagreements. Next week then, ahead of the Convention's inaugural session on 28 February, the Commission will decide on the issues it wants to be tackled as a priority and also on its own working methods (publication of Communications, monitoring work, etc). In the negotiations on Thursday, it was decided that the College would play a pro-active role and follow the Convention's work very closely, along with all the other debates on the future of Europe. The Commissioners and their President addressed the issue of power sharing in the European Union, coming out against the idea of adopting a catalogue, but in favour of a root-and-branch review of power, noted the spokesperson. Commissioners Michel Barnier and Antonio Vitorino are both members of the Convention's Presidium.
