Brussels, 21/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Council for Motor Trades and Repairs (CECRA) says that the Commission's draft car dealership regulation that will replace the current scheme on 1 October 2002 will give "consumers wrong expectations" since they will expect "car prices will decrease 20% and more because the system would be opened to more competition". Reacting to the Commission's proposal (that Commissioner Monti will be unveiling at the end of the month to open the sector up to greater competition), CECRA President, Jürgen Creutzig, how prices could drop by any great extent since distribution costs in the sector were already modest. He felt that the new proposal would "accelerate a process of concentration for the disadvantage not only for those enterprises and their employees but mainly for the consumers… higher prices and less quality of the service". Even before publication, the Commission's proposal is unruffling feathers among car manufacturers who are not making any attempt to hide their concerns (see EUROPE of 10 January, p.9 and 18 January, p.16).
