Strasbourg, 21/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted the report by Vincenzo Lavarra (DS, Italy), which gives a positive assessment of a Commission communication on integration strategy, in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), for the environment-related aspects. The Commission, however, is invited to give a more specific definition of the "environmental and socio-economic advantages" linked to the integration of environmental policies in the CFP. While acknowledging that there is a problem caused by over-fishing of fish stocks, the EP invites the Commission to formulate proposals other than the "simplistic" solution of definitive withdrawal of fishing vessels and fishermen. It calls on the Commission, moreover, to take into account the unfavourable impact that the proliferation of algae causing fish diseases will have on fish resources and the ecosystem. It expresses its deep concern regarding the development of genetically modified fish outside the EU.
