Despite upsurge in violence in region, Josep Pique considers that peace process is only possible path

Brussels, 21/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - In Beirut on Friday, EU Council President Josep Pique condemned the attack on Hadera and qualified the peace process is "moribund", considering however that the process was the only possible path. Mr. Pique stated "that all responsibilities must be assumed, all risks, and pursue the arrests and destruction of terrorist networks, as these types of acts of terrorist violence only place a peace process that is already practically moribund in a dead-end". He also qualified as predictable the reaction of the Israeli government of launching an offensive against the West Bank and reaffirmed "the need to intensify diplomatic contacts so calm the situation", observing that "the way of acting on both sides only generates further violence and confrontation". Mr. Pique said that despite the recent upsurge in violence between Israelis and Palestinians, there was "not other solution" to the peace process. "We have no other solution (..) but to continue (…) It is not possible to find a military solution", he declared to the press at the end of talks with his Lebanese counterpart Mahud Hammud. Beirut was the last stage of a round of the middle East by the Spanish Foreign minister, round in which he had talks with the authorities in Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Syria and Palestine.
