In Tokyo, Commissioner Chris Patten announces a pledge of 200 million euro in 2002 for country's reconstruction

Brussels, 21/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - With a pledge of 200 million euro from the Community funds for 2002, and the started intention of reaching 1 billion euro over the next five years (2002-2006), the European Union should be among the most generous donors at the conference for the reconstruction of Afghanistan, meeting for two days, and bringing together over sixty countries in Tokyo (Japan). Announcing these figures, Chris Patten, European Commissioner for external relations expressed the desire that that conference should arrive at a fair distribution of the burden within the international community. "I am happy to see Prime minister Karzai and certain key ministers of the interim Afghan authority here. This demonstrates a firm commitment by the Afghan people to play a full role and the rebirth of their country. To build a government is as important s to build roads and bridges. That is why (…) we are prepared to place substantial resources at their disposal for institutional capacities. Afghanistan is fundamentally a rural economy. It is essential that the agricultural sector be revitalized (…) Full co-operation in the fight against illegal drugs is a key pre-condition for the support all here engage ourselves", declared Chris Patten. According to the latest indications, the Union's contribution would be 550 million euro in 2002 (200 million of which from the Community budget and 350 million distributed between the Member States). Here, as an indication, is the key-distribution between Member states: Germany 80 million (320 over 4 years), United Kingdom 60 million (288 million over 5 years), Italy 45 million, Netherlands 40 million, Sweden 32 million, France 27.5 million, Spain 22 million, Denmark 13 Million, Belgium 8 million, Luxembourg 5 million, Ireland 4 million, Austria some 2.2 million (6.5 over three years), finland 30 million over three years, Greece 3.5 million over 5 years, Portugal 5 million.
