Brussels, 17/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Council, Guy Verhofstadt, and the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, will be heading the European delegation to the EU/Canada Summit in Ottawa on Tuesday. According to a Commission spokesperson, this is a "conventional" summit given the lack of major disagreements between the two sides. On the agenda for the European and Canadian negotiations (to be chaired by the Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien) will be the international situation (fighting terrorism, the Middle East and the situation in Africa) and an assessment of bilateral relations. From the Canadian capital, Guy Verhofstadt will fly off with the High Representative for the CFSP, Javier Solana (but not Mr Prodi) to Washington, where the two men will meet with the US Secretary of State for Defence, Colin Powell. The discussions will focus on the Middle East and the Belgian Presidency would like to make a last attempt to bring the two sides further together. There is a significant difference in support for the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, on either side of the Atlantic. Another area of disagreement - the deployment of international observers requested by the Palestinians (the EU relaunched this idea last Friday) but opposed by the United States.
