Combating terrorism to be Spanish Presidency's number one priority

Brussels, 17/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - At a press conference in Brussels on Monday evening, the Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Piqué, presented the priorities of the future Spanish Presidency, stressing that it would be the third time his country had held the Presidency. "More Europe" will be Spain's slogan for the first half of 2002, a slogan that the Presidency intends to apply in all sectors, to all policies and to all aspects of the building of Europe, while seeking to be effective and make as much progress as possible in all areas. He went on to list the Spanish Presidency's six priority areas: 1) combating terrorism. Mr Piqué called for the implementation of a genuine "single judicial area" to permit an effective and co-ordinated struggle against terrorism (including the new threats) and welcomed the work by the Belgian Presidency which made it possible to make more progress in the last few weeks than in the last few years. The Spanish Presidency wants to strengthen various instruments (he mentioned cooperation between security forces, common investigation teams, Europol and common lists); international co-operation and making the anti-terrorism fight an essential part of agreements with third countries; 2) Make a success of the launch of the euro; 3) associate the success of the euro with competitiveness and ensure that the Barcelona Summit "strengthens the Lisbon spirit" and gives a new impulse to structural reforms; 4) enlargement; 5) strengthening CFSP and CDSP, talking of "more Europe in the world"; and 6) launching the debate on the future of Europe with the Convention. EUROPE will return to this.
