Franz Fischler welcomes US farm policy ideas, but WTO slams high public aid

Brussels, 21/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - European Agriculture Commissioner, Franz Fischler, has given a cautious welcome to the strategy paper published on Thursday by the US Secretary of State for Agriculture, Ann Veneman, for the future direction of US farm policy. Mr Fischler welcomed the "apparent" switch of emphasis in domestic support to less trade-distorting measures and stewardship of the environment.
