Brussels, 14/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EU and NATO were to clarify the security conditions for European observers in the Presevo valley during the joint meeting Wednesday evening in Brussels between the EU's Political and Security Committee, the "Cops", and NATO. Following the decision by the EU Council on 26 February to fix at 30 the number of European observers in the Presevo valley in southern Serbia, the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, had sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson. In the letter he called on Lord Robertson for details about military protection for these observers. Lord Robertson gave indications mainly on the conditions for evacuation for medical reasons and assistance to observers. These details, it seems, satisfy most EU Member States except France and the United Kingdom, which call for additional guarantees.
