Austria, requesting a transitional period of seven years for free movement of persons, says it could be "flexible"

Brussels, 12/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Austria announced last week that it could adopt a flexible attitude in the accession negotiations with the Central and East European applicant states on the sensitive issue of free movement of persons (workers in particular), in spite of Vienna's official position, which, like Germany's, consists of requesting a seven-year transitional period prior to the establishment of total free movement of persons from the new Member States.
