European Economic and Social Committee considers proposed reforms for rice to be too radical and those for fruit and vegetables inadequate

Brussels, 24/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - At its plenary session last week, the European Economic and Social Committee adopted its Opinion (42 in favour, 12 against with 1 abstention) on the common market organisation in the rice sector (rapporteur: Maria-Luisa Santiago, Portugal, employers group). The Committee is against the abolition of the intervention scheme as the "latter plays a considerable role in setting market prices".
