Council failure over allocation to Media Plus programme - Concern expressed by several Member States regarding State aid - European Commission to issue communication on cinema in near future

Brussels, 26/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the Culture Council ended in failure. Despite a "very long round the table discussion" and several bilateral meetings between the French Presidency and the delegations expressing the most reticence on this issue, the Fifteen did not come to an agreement on the budget to be allocated to the Community programme, Media Plus, in support of the audiovisual sector, for the years 2000-2004.
