DEUTSCHE TELEKOM acquired the American mobile telephone POWERTEL (turnover of USD 212.3 million made since the beginning of the year with 727,000 clients) for USD 5.89 billion, thus strengthening its activities in the United Sates after the acquisition of VOICESTREAM (see EI of 24 & 25 July). The merger between POWERTEL and VOICESTREAM will enable DEUTSCHE TELEKOM to have 3.3 million clients in the United States.
