Union to reduce by 12% import quotas of Russia steel, in response to Russian restrictions on scrap exports - Political significance played down

Brussels, 07/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Fifteen reached a compromise on how to respond to the restrictions Russia introduced (in April 1998) on its exports of scrap. It was already taken for granted that this response would take the form of a reduction in import quotas on Russian steel for the current year, but positions differed on the percentage of reductions to apply.

The European Commission had proposed 20%, which some countries found excessive. Britain, Sweden and Greece did not...
