London, 12/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel held a two-hour meeting with Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, on Tuesday in London. The two Ministers discussed the following subjects at their meeting: - IGC: Mr Michel stated that both countries would like to see the Conference conclude at the end of this year and with "substantive results". Asked whether London and Brussels were on the "same line" in this regard, Mr Cook replied: "I think the answer to your question is yes", explaining that the two countries were committed to seeing enlargement of the EU and therefore to seeing the European Union "modernise its structures" so as to be prepared for this challenge. As far as procedure is concerned, Robin Cook stated that the "immediate task is to make as rapid progress as we can" on the Amsterdam "leftovers" and that the Fifteen could then look at other questions. In his view, the two countries are "both comfortable" with this strategy; - security/defence: "We share similar views on the necessity of reinforcing the capabilities of the Union in the field of European defence", declared Louis Michel (who, more generally, voiced satisfaction that London and Brussels are able to "develop common approaches" and that Great Britain is "firmly committed" to Europe); - Africa: the two Ministers agreed to work together at the forthcoming UN Security Council session, according to Mr Cook, "for the prevention of conflict and the promotion of stability and development in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the neighbouring countries". Mr Michel added that they had discussed the best way of addressing the illicit trade in diamonds and arms trafficking. The two Ministers also reviewed preparation of Euro 2000 and measures to prevent hooliganism.
