Brussels, 12/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Chair of the EPP/ED group, German Hans-Gert Pöttering, has called President Prodi's decision to invite the Head of State of Libya to Brussels "reckless and incomprehensible". For Mr Pöttering, this invitation is untimely given positions adopted by Mr Ghadafi, notably on the Middle East peace process. Ghadafi has allegedly also set conditions for the visit. The leader of the Christian Democrats and Conservatives recommended that Mr Prodi ensure in future that he has the assent of the different EU institutions before taking such initiatives. While approving of possible full participation by Libya in the Barcelona process, he said the integration of this country into Euro-Mediterranean cooperation mechanisms should be conditional upon: i) recognition of human rights; ii) the abandonment of all forms of support for terrorism; iii) support for the Middle East peace process.
