30/04/2026 (Agence Europe) – The College of Europe appointed João Gomes Cravinho as Rector for a renewable five-year term on Thursday 30 April. Pending his appointment, Ewa Ośniecka-Tamecka will continue in the interim role she has held since Federica Mogherini resigned last December (see EUROPE 13766/20). João Gomes Cravinho is currently the European Union’s Special Representative for the Sahel. He has been the European Union’s ambassador to India and Brazil, as well as Portugal’s Minister of Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs. “We believe that João Cravinho’s dedication to scholarly excellence and his long-standing professional experience will help further strengthen the College’s position as one of Europe’s most renowned centres of excellence in European studies”, said Herman Van Rompuy, President of the Administrative Council of the College of Europe, in a press release.
