30/04/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 30 April, the European Union released an emergency aid package of €100,000 for Tanzania, in response to the severe flooding and landslides that hit the Mbeya region a month ago, killing at least twenty people, many of them children. As a result of the severe damage to infrastructure and livelihoods caused by the bad weather, 600 people have been displaced and are currently taking refuge in schools where access to drinking water is critical. European aid will therefore support the Tanzanian Red Cross to provide shelter, healthcare and sanitation facilities for 2,600 beneficiaries by the end of July. This intervention is part of the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF). (JM)
