On Tuesday 14 April, the Farm Europe think-tank and the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB), which represents the interests of Ukrainian agribusinesses, announced the launch of a structured dialogue on the future of agriculture in an enlarged European Union, accompanied by the signing of a cooperation agreement.
The initiative aims to anticipate the impact of Ukraine’s accession to the EU on the European and Ukrainian agricultural sectors, “it raises major structural challenges”, according to Farm Europe.
The dialogue will be facilitated by Dacian Cioloș, former European Commissioner for Agriculture. It will focus on defining a common trajectory for agricultural systems and agri-food chains. The focus will be on economic and environmental performance, digital and climate transition, the cohesion of rural areas and the resilience of farming systems, in the light of Ukraine’s wartime experience.
For Farm Europe, enlargement must “strengthen, not weaken, our collective capacity to produce and innovate”. The first joint recommendations should be presented to European decision-makers in the coming months.
