On Monday 16 March, European foreign ministers approved new financial support for national mine action programmes in several African countries.
This decision by the Council of the EU is intended to contribute to the implementation of the international roadmap adopted in November 2024 in Siem Reap (Cambodia) by the States Parties to the Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines.
€3 million will be made available to the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) for a period of 36 months. It will benefit Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal, South Sudan and Zimbabwe.
In addition to these five countries, 16 other African States Parties to the Ottawa Convention will benefit from an exchange of knowledge and experience aimed at accelerating compliance with their international obligations. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
