09/03/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 6 March, the Icelandic government announced that a referendum would be held on 29 August on the resumption of negotiations for Iceland’s accession to the European Union (see EUROPE 13818/23). “The upcoming referendum will pose the question to the Icelandic public whether Iceland should resume accession negotiations with the EU”, announced the government in a press release. If the result of the referendum were to be in favour of resuming negotiations, and if these were to be successful, a second referendum would be held to ask Icelandic voters whether Iceland should indeed join the EU, the government said. Iceland submitted its application in 2009 and negotiations took place from 2010 to 2013. Reykjavík withdrew its application in 2015 (see EUROPE 11274/17). (CG)
