On Monday 9 March, the European Commission announced an investment of over €103 million in seven strategic projects across the European Union as part of the LIFE programme.
These projects, located in Finland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain, aim to accelerate the implementation of European environment and climate policies, particularly in the areas of climate and water resilience, nature restoration, the circular economy and sustainable land use.
The funding is for the restoration of aquatic ecosystems in Finland (ACWA LIFE, €16.5 million), strengthening the climate resilience of the Grand Est region in France (LIFE ADAPT EST, €15.6 million), the protection of marine ecosystems in Greece (LIFE SIP GR Blue, €8.9 million), and the transition to a circular economy in Limburg in the Netherlands (CEL4LIFE, €6.9 million), the deployment of circular solutions in the Azores (Portugal) (LIFE IP AGRILOOP, €15.8 million), nature-based solutions in Slovakia (NatAdaptSK, €10.1 million) and the restoration of 26,200 hectares of wetlands in Spain (LIFE HumedalES, €29.7 million).
These projects form part of the total budget of €5.43 billion allocated to the LIFE programme for the period 2021-2027 under the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).
