MEPs adopt their position on international measures on fish stock management

On 25 February, the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries endorsed the transposal into EU law of measures adopted between 2018 and 2024 by six regional fisheries management organisations at international level.

MEPs adopted (19 votes in favour, 3 against and 4 abstentions) the mandate for interinstitutional negotiations with the Council of the EU, as part of the draft report by Thomas Bajada (S&D, Maltese). Parliament’s mandate must now be confirmed at the plenary session in March, before the opening of inter-institutional negotiations with the EU Council under the Cyprus Presidency.

The European Commission’s proposal aims to strengthen the external governance of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and to transpose most of the rules adopted by six RFMOs into EU law. These are the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO), the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).
