On Friday 27 February, the European Commission adopted the 15th edition of the European List of Ship Recycling Facilities, which for the first time includes an approved shipyard in Germany, located in Emden.
The list renews the inclusion of four EU shipyards, located in Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania and Spain, as well as another shipyard in Türkiye.
Three shipyards have been removed from the list: a Finnish shipyard that chose not to renew its authorisation, a Northern Ireland shipyard that failed to provide the necessary information, and a Turkish shipyard that failed to comply with EU Ship Recycling Regulation, particularly with regard to shoreline protection.
Recycling ships under dangerous conditions presents risks of pollution and damage to human health.
Inclusion on the European list enables approved facilities to handle large ships flying the flag of an EU Member State, while guaranteeing compliance with strict environmental, safety and working conditions standards.
Ship recycling also plays a key role in the development of the circular economy, recovering valuable materials and reducing demand for virgin raw materials.
The updated European list now includes 41 facilities: 30 in Europe (EU, Norway and the UK), 10 in Türkiye and one in the United States. The Member States supported the Commission’s decision to update the list.
