02/03/26 (Agence Europe) – The European Union welcomed 4.2 million immigrants from outside EU in 2024, compared with 4.4 million in 2023, according to the latest migration data published by Eurostat on Friday 27 February. This main flow is supplemented by 1.5 million people who have moved from one Member State to another. Taking into account departures, estimated at 1.6 million, the European migration balance remains largely positive. Spain recorded the highest number of arrivals (1.3 million), followed by Germany (1.1 million). In proportion to their population, Malta, Cyprus and Luxembourg have the highest immigration rates, unlike France and Slovakia. Eurostat also points out that the immigrant population is considerably younger than the resident population, with a median age of 30.2 years, compared to 44.9 years for the EU population as a whole at 1 January 2025.
