Brussels, 28/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – Contrary to what we wrote (see EUROPE 13795/14), on Tuesday 27 January MEPs validated the political agreements reached in December with the Council of the EU on the new concept of ‘safe third countries’ and a list of so-called ‘safe countries of origin’ (see EUROPE 13776/7), and not a list of ‘safe third countries’. The EU Council gave the green light on 19 December (see EUROPE 13777/9). The first text, which modifies the application of the ‘safe third country’ concept, was narrowly approved by 37 votes to 34, with 2 abstentions; the second establishes a list of ‘safe countries of origin’, including seven third countries (Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, India, Bangladesh, Colombia and Kosovo) and EU candidate countries. It was approved by 40 votes to 24, with 10 abstentions. The article has been modified online in both language versions. Links to agreements: https://aeur.eu/f/kfq; https://aeur.eu/f/kfr (SP)
