European Commission is asked to clarify its intentions regarding new action plan to implement European Pillar of Social Rights

On Thursday 22 January, the chair of European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, Li Andersson (The Left, Finnish), will ask the European Commission where it stands in the preparation of its new action plan to implement the European Pillar of Social Rights.

An oral question to this effect was tabled in December, at a time when elected representatives were concerned about a potential setback for the Commission.

As the EU faces geopolitical uncertainty, the green and digital transitions and demographic change, Member States’ education and training systems, labour markets and social protection systems are under unprecedented pressure. While good progress towards the 2030 headline target on employment has been made, progress towards the adult training target and the poverty reduction target is too slow. Moreover, there are wide variations among Member States, regions and different groups of society regarding all targets”, writes the chair.

European Parliament wants to know how the Commission intends to tackle the labour and skills shortage and facilitate access to the labour market and quality jobs “for all, including for those furthest from the labour markets, e.g. those not in education, employment, or training, young people, Roma people and people with disabilities”. And “how will the Commission combat homelessness?

The Commission has reportedly not abandoned the idea of presenting a new action plan, but does not intend to do so before July.
