16/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission should present a new security strategy for the European Union “within the next six months”, i.e. still under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, confirmed the EU institution’s spokesman in charge of the dossier, Thomas Régnier, on Friday 16 January, the day after the announcement by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen (see EUROPE 13787/1). According to him, defence will not be the only issue addressed, since the future European strategy should cover “strategic sectors” such as “semi-conductors, cybersecurity and critical raw materials”, with the aim for the EU of reducing dependence and being more autonomous in this “new geopolitical context”. The Commission adopted an economic security doctrine in December 2025 (see EUROPE 13765/5), an internal security strategy in April 2025 (see EUROPE 13612/13) and a maritime security strategy in October 2023 (see EUROPE 13278/36).
