16/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 16 January in Rio de Janeiro, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the European Union and Brazil were moving “towards a very important political agreement on critical raw materials”. “This agreement will frame our cooperation on joint investment projects in lithium, nickel and rare earths,” she added after a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In her view, this agreement is “key” for the digital and ecological transitions and “for strategic independence in a world where minerals tend to become an instrument of coercion”. Mrs von der Leyen promised that the European offer would “always be different” from what other countries could offer, because it would also be “win-win” for local communities and would respect the “highest standards” in terms of transparency and respect for the environment.
