The European Union leads the world in green inventions related to circularity, energy-intensive industries and clean transport, according to the Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard published by the European Commission on Monday 22 December. However, it is lagging behind when it comes to inventions linked to the twin transition – the green transition and the digital transition.
The EU continues to dominate the rankings in terms of cumulative international green patent filings, alongside Japan, although China is rapidly catching up. Germany and France remain the main contributors across most key technology areas. A number of Member States, including Sweden, Finland and Ireland, nevertheless show strengths in twin transition domain, such as advanced technological industries, digital infrastructures and favourable policy environments.
The framework conditions in countries at the top of the innovation league table are more conducive to the creation and scaling of small, R&D-intensive businesses, while R&D investment per employee remains relatively low in moderate innovator countries.
