14/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – During a COP30 event dedicated to energy that was held in Brazil on Friday, 14 November, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen defended the methane regulation adopted in 2024 (see EUROPE 13453/26), declaring it to be “the most comprehensive and ambitious of its kind”. EU partners, like the United States (noticeably absent from this year’s COP), have criticised this regulation, believing that it hinders liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to the EU (see EUROPE 13707/17). The commissioner nevertheless insisted, “By implementing this regulation, we can drive change [...] globally.” “It is the first legislation in the world which also regulates methane emissions from imports of oil, gas, and coal,” he continued. He also emphasised that the regulation is built on “a foundation of transparency” requiring solid proof of reporting. (PLD)
