On Thursday 6 November, the European Commission opened a call for evidence to gather feedback from stakeholders on a communication to be issued in the first half of 2026 on the future development of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Europe.
This strategy “should contribute to the competitiveness of the EU industry as well as innovation in the nuclear sector in the context of other major economies investing in and developing these new nuclear technologies”, says the Commission.
The initiative is part of the launch of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors in 2024, to ensure the successful deployment of the first SMR projects in Europe by the early 2030s.
In particular, the Communication will aim to strengthen collaboration to build a “robust and scalable " supply chain across Europe and encourage closer cooperation between Member States to harmonise regulatory and industry requirements.
It will also serve to identify ways of strengthening EU leadership in research and development and removing obstacles to investment.
