Under the LIFE programme, the European Commission has granted more than €358 million to 132 projects aimed at protecting biodiversity, boosting climate resilience and accelerating the energy transition.
This is more than half of the €536 million required for these projects, and is supplemented by public and private funding.
A total of €225 million (including €147 million from the EU) will support 34 projects aimed at restoring natural habitats and threatened species, such as Heath LIFE in Sweden and LIFE for RIVERS in Poland.
€133 million (including €76 million from the EU) will be allocated to 31 projects promoting a clean, circular and energy-efficient economy, such as LIFE RiverFlow in Latvia and InBioSoil in Spain.
€96 million (including €58 million from the EU) will go to 19 projects aimed at strengthening climate resilience and mitigation efforts, while €82 million (including €77 million from the EU) will support 48 projects aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy.
The current LIFE programme began in 2021 and runs until 2027, with a budget of €5.43 billion. The grants are managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
