Brussels, 25/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Wednesday 24 September, some sixty MEPs, mainly from The Left and Greens/EFA groups, called for the European agency Frontex to intervene to protect the ships of the Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla, which is intended to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. When questioned, the EU institution took note on Thursday 25 of “the willingness of Member States to protect the flotilla”, in particular the dispatch of ships by Italy and Spain, while remaining silent on any hypothetical action at European level. In another letter, The Left group also urged the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, to call for “an international enquiry” into the damage suffered by several boats in international waters and to take diplomatic action to guarantee the protection of Europeans on board the ships in the flotilla.
