On Wednesday 24 September, the European Union, Iceland and Norway announced the closure of the Northern Dimension Policy.
The EU and these two countries “have decided to terminate cooperation in the framework of the Northern Dimension. The respective foundational documents, in particular the Northern Dimension policy framework document and declaration, should accordingly be considered terminated”, they announced in a press release.
Launched 24 years ago, the aim of this policy was to “promote good neighbourly relations, equal partnership, common responsibility and transparency in its region of operation”.
On 8 March 2022, the EU, Iceland and Norway announced the suspension of the Northern Dimension’s political activities with Russia and Belarus following the war of aggression against Ukraine.
The EU, Reykjavik and Oslo express their determination to continue their cooperation on issues of common interest in the northern regions of Europe within other relevant international frameworks. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
