EASA identifies several concerns among aviation professionals regarding introduction of AI in their sector

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has identified a number of concerns about the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in the aviation sector, according to the results of a survey published on Thursday 4 September.

Indeed, aviation professionals have identified AI performance limitations, data protection and privacy, liability and possible security implications as risks. Around two-thirds of respondents expressed reservations, rejecting at least one proposed AI scenario.

A strong majority stressed the need for strong regulation and oversight by EASA and national aviation authorities to guide the safe and responsible integration of AI. The participants also expressed their fear of seeing human knowledge and skills deteriorate if AI took over all or part of the tasks.

EASA has recognised the request of aviation professionals to continue to work with them, to listen to them and to take into account the wider comments of the general public. A second survey, to be shared with the general public, is due to be launched in the coming months.
