Europeans call for new political roadmap to be implemented

On Saturday, 23 August, the EU Delegation and the Diplomatic Missions of EU Member States to Libya welcomed the new political roadmap that Special Representative of the [United Nations] Secretary-General Hanna Tetteh presented to the United Nations Security Council on 21 August.

In a joint statement, they urged all Libyan stakeholders to swiftly implement the roadmap’s initial measures, including the reconstitution of the High National Elections Commission’s board of directors and the modification of electoral frameworks, and supported the call for a structured dialogue that “places the Libyan people at the centre of the process”.

This roadmap consists of three pillars: a viable legal and constitutional framework for holding presidential and legislative elections, the unification of institutions through a new unified government, and a structured national dialogue to address critical issues. The EU Delegation and the Diplomatic Missions of [EU] Member States [to Libya] believe that these three pillars “provide a clear path to ending the political stalemate and holding elections”.
