European Parliament defended its ambitious position at United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York

A delegation of ten MEPs from the European Parliament called for an unwavering commitment to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held in New York from 21 to 23 July.

Jointly led by the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Development (DEVE), Robert Biedroń (S&D, Polish), and Ingeborg ter Laak (EPP, Dutch) for the Committee on the Environment (ENVI), the delegation defended the resolution adopted by the European Parliament at the July 2025 plenary session (see EUROPE 13677/8)

At a time when some are retreating, the EU must take the lead and set an example. This means translating our ambition into concrete action, in particular by guaranteeing adequate funding for the SDGs in the next Multiannual Financial Framework”, said Robert Biedroń. According to Ingeborg ter Laak, MEPs have “the tools - and the duty - to make progress on the SDGs”.

The funding shortfall was also discussed during an exchange with UN Secretary General António Guterres. SDGs related to health, gender equality, decent work, protection of the oceans and global partnerships were the main points discussed at the High-Level Political Forum. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
