29/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 29 July, Michael O’Flaherty, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, published a memorandum on the human rights of the Roma and the impact of serious environmental problems on human rights in North Macedonia. It welcomes the constitutional recognition of the right to a healthy environment, but is critical of the “poor implementation” of the commitments made by the authorities in this area. “Environmental risks affect Roma disproportionately”, Michael O’Flaherty also points out, citing “in particular air and waste pollution, lack of sanitation and exclusion from public services”. The Commissioner notes a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in April 2024 condemning Switzerland for inaction on climate change.
